Gum Disease Treatment Sydney Patients Can Trust

We take gum disease treatment in Sydney seriously. Gum disease or periodontitis is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults and yet it can also be easily prevented. If you have receding gums, bleeding gums, loose teeth, or soreness when you brush your teeth, this could be a sign that you have gum disease.

What is gum disease?

The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis and this can be reversed simply by practising better oral hygiene. However, if this is ignored, gingivitis can quickly escalate into a more severe form of gum disease known as periodontal disease. Sydney patients should be aware that this can cause bone erosion and eventual tooth loss as well as difficulties associated with eating and speaking. Periodontitis is also linked to stroke and coronary heart disease, and those who smoke, have a poor diet or suffer from high blood pressure, are particularly at risk.

What causes gum disease?

One of the main causes of gum disease in Sydney patients is plaque. This bacteria-laden film coats the surface of the teeth and if it is not removed it can harden into calculus. The body’s reaction to this is to cause an infection in the gums which can lead to gum disease.

Other causes of gum disease include smoking, genetics, and some medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis and heart disease. If you or a family member suffer from any of these conditions, we recommend regular check-ups to maintain good oral health and to diagnose and treat any gum problems early.

What is involved in gum disease treatment?

Our experienced dentists always aim for a non-invasive conservative approach to Sydney gum disease treatment by means of improving oral hygiene, regular dental appointments and root debridement.

That said, there are times when these methods cannot repair unhealthy tissue. Fortunately, we use advanced technologies and superior materials at our Sydney Dental Group clinic to treat irreversible damage caused by periodontal disease. These include:

  • Crown lengthening procedures
  • Bone grafts
  • Pocket reduction (flap) procedures
  • Regenerative procedures

Our experienced dentists will discuss some of your best treatment options during your initial consultation.

What to expect after treatment

The important thing to remember is that gum disease can return so it is particularly important to care properly for your gums after treatment. To maintain healthy gums  you should follow the 3 steps below:

  1. Visit a dentist at least 2 times a year so they can remove plaque from around your teeth and gums
  2. Have your gum pockets measured annually by our dentist or a periodontist
  3. Brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day and floss once daily. Our dentist or hygienist will show you how to brush correctly.
