Sleep Dentistry in Baulkham Hills
Sleep Your Way Through Dental Treatment
If you are a nervous or anxious patient that requires dental treatment that cannot be completed under IV sedation, then general anaesthesia or sleep dentistry in Baulkham Hills may be a better alternative for you.
While advanced dental sedation in Baulkham Hills plays an important part in treating you, we believe that having a caring team and gentle dentists goes a long way to helping reduce anxiety too.
General anaesthetic in Baulkham Hills – What does it involve?
General anaesthetic involves being put asleep in a hospital by a Specialist Anaesthetist so your dentist, dental specialist or surgeon can complete a dental procedure without you being aware, worrying or feeling the procedure. When the procedure is done, the Anaesthetist will wake you up and make sure you are safe before you leave the hospital under the care of a support person.
When should general anaesthesia be used?
Because IV sedation and other sedation methods are so effective, general anaesthesia is not used that often for most dental procedures. However, it can be useful for certain situations:
- For more invasive dental procedures such as impacted wisdom teeth removal that are completely buried in bone
- Complex oral surgery
- For patients who have a high tolerance of medications used in IV sedation
- Extremely anxious patients are unable to cooperate when sedated. Rare as our dentists are very well trained in dealing with anxious and dental phobia
What is the difference between sedation and anaesthesia?
Sedation, also known as twilight sedation is where you are half-awake and half-asleep, almost in a dream-like state. You can still respond to simple questions but you feel calm and relaxed. We can perform IV sedation in our Sydney Dental Group practice.
General anaesthesia is a state of being completely unaware. It is like being asleep without dreams. You ‘wake-up’ when our Specialist Anaesthetist stops the medication. We have admitting rights to some of the best hospitals in Baulkham Hills for procedures done under general anaesthetic.
Method of administering
For IV sedation, our dentists work with Specialist Medical Doctors that administer medicine into a vein in your arm or back of your hand. We offer this in our Sydney Dental Group rooms. General anaesthesia, on the other hand, requires admission to one of our affiliated accredited hospitals. A Specialist Anaesthetist will put you asleep.
IV sedation brings about a peaceful but drowsy state of consciousness which normally a patient has no recollection of once the effects wear off. In comparison, a general anaesthetic renders the patient unconscious for the duration of the dental procedure.
If you require complex oral surgery, our Baulkham Hills dentists will discuss your unique situation with you and decide on an option that works best for you. We work closely with medical specialists who are trained and experienced in delivering general anaesthesia. We do not work with dental sedationists.
